There’s something utterly enchanting about spending Christmas in the Cotswolds. The honey-hued villages dusted with frost, the crackle of open fires, and the timeless traditions of the English countryside all come together to create a festive experience like no other. From cozy evenings in historic estates to magical encounters with reindeer, Christmas here feels straight out of a storybook.
A Festive Evening at Badminton Estate
One of my most memorable Christmas experiences in the Cotswolds of 2024 was an evening at the historic Badminton Estate, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Beaufort. Stepping into the old kitchens, you’re immediately transported back in time. The scent of Mulled Rosé (Which I must add, was a revelation of a drink!) and festive delights filled the air as the glow of the open fire flickers against the ancient stone walls.
The highlight of the evening was a cooking demonstration led by none other than Nancy Lawson, the owner of Overton Manor and a celebrated chef known for her dedication to seasonal and local ingredients. Watching Nancy at work is mesmerising—she weaves everyday stories of family life into her culinary expertise, and shares anecdotes about cooking seasonally and simply for yummy Christmas feasting and tips for perfecting traditional recipes.
As she prepares sumptuous dish after sumptuous dish, you sip a glass of Mulled wine marvelling at how the centuries-old kitchen is alive with warmth and laughter once more. It’s a moment that captures the essence of Cotswold Christmas: tradition, hospitality, and the joy of sharing good food.
A Visit to the Cotswold Reindeer Herd
No Christmas is complete without a touch of magic, and the Cotswold Reindeer Herd delivers it in spades. Nestled on a picturesque farm, this enchanting experience lets visitors meet these gentle creatures up close.
Walking among the Christmas trees and reindeer, you can’t help but feel a childlike wonder. The knowledgeable handlers share stories about each reindeer’s personality and their role in spreading festive cheer. For families, it’s a highlight of the season, and for those who’ve long believed in the magic of Christmas, it’s a heartwarming reminder that some traditions never lose their charm.
Christmas Day at Home
For me, Christmas Day is a time to bask in the warmth of home and family. The day begins with the soft glow of the Christmas tree lights illuminating the room, casting a magical ambiance over the presents neatly arranged underneath. The fireplace crackles in the background, adding to the cozy atmosphere.
I start the morning in my favorite Joules Land Rover Christmas jumper, enjoying a cup of tea as the house fills with the scent of roasting turkey and spiced vegetables. Later, I change into dark green tweed trousers and a crisp white shirt for Christmas lunch—a family tradition that feels as timeless as the season itself.
Gathered around the table, we share laughter, stories, and a feast that’s as much about togetherness as it is about the food. The day unfolds with a rhythm that’s both comforting and celebratory, making it a cherished cornerstone of the holiday season.
The Traditional Boxing Day Hunt in Broadway
Boxing Day in the Cotswolds is steeped in tradition, and nowhere is this more evident than in Broadway. The picturesque village becomes a hub of activity as locals and visitors gather to witness the annual Boxing Day hunt. Riders dressed in traditional hunting attire assemble on horseback, their scarlet jackets a striking contrast to the wintery landscape.
The sound of hunting horns echoes through the streets as the procession sets off, watched by families sipping hot mulled wine and children clutching cups of steaming cocoa. While the hunt itself is a ceremonial nod to history rather than a practical pursuit, it’s a cherished part of the festive season that brings the community together in a celebration of heritage and camaraderie.
Evening Drinks at Thyme Estate’s Baa Bar
As the day winds down, there’s no better place to gather with friends than the Baa Bar at Thyme Estate. Nestled in the rolling Cotswold hills, Thyme is a historic English country estate that offers a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of the festive period.
With its elegantly refined interiors, soft lighting, and carefully curated cocktails, the Baa Bar is the perfect setting for festive drinks. Whether you’re sipping a winter-spiced martini or indulging in a rich mulled wine, the atmosphere is one of relaxed sophistication. Laughter fills the air as friends exchange stories and toast to the season, while the estate’s stunning grounds outside shimmer under a blanket of frost.
The Spirit of Christmas in the Cotswolds
Christmas in the Cotswolds isn’t just about picturesque settings or festive activities—it’s about the feeling of connection. Whether you’re learning to cook in a historic kitchen, meeting reindeer under a crisp winter sky, watching the Boxing Day hunt, or sharing Christmas Day traditions with loved ones, every moment feels imbued with warmth and joy.
If you’re looking for a Christmas that’s rich in tradition, community, and charm, there’s nowhere quite like the Cotswolds to make your season merry and bright.
